Blue
Have you heard of Blue Monday, the saddest day of the year? According to a series of debatably scientific calculations, the third Monday in January is the gloomiest day of the year for our mood. The relationship between the color blue and sadness probably derives from English navy tradition: if the captain of a ship died, his sailors would cast a blue flag before docking. Yet blue is also associated with tranquility, trust and prestige, while also taking on various meanings depending on the context. In western cultures, it is associated with men, while in China it’s chosen for women. In Catholic countries like Mexico, blue is the color of the Virgin Mary’s garments and veil, and because of this it symbolizes purity and hope. In India, it is the color of Krishna’s skin, one of the most beloved divinities in Hinduism, which incarnates love and tenderness.
